Erin Houk has a full-time job as a nurse. Long-time friend Amanda Shutt is a social worker. But the two women are such fans of boutique shopping that they decided to open their own store in downtown Decatur.
Opal and Ivy, the shop at 222 N. Second St., opened Oct. 20. Prior to that, the pair sold carefully selected items on Facebook for about a year.
Houk said the appeal of a boutique to shoppers is that only one, or perhaps just a few, of any given item is sold. There’s very little risk of running into someone wearing the same outfit. “Once it’s gone, it’s gone,” she said.
The shop sells clothing, shoes, handbags and a variety of other accessories for work, casual or a night out. The selection includes merchandise that appeals to women of various ages and sizes. The quality of the merchandise also is good, another advantage of boutique shopping, Houk said.
Currently, the shop’s hours are limited to Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Friday and Saturday. Houk’s mother helps out and Houk and Shutt staff the shop when they can work it in around their other jobs. Even though they are not there as much as they would like, “we still want to be fully involved in the shop,” Houk said.
