The Allen County Bar Association issued the following statement on the inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
As members of the Allen County Bar Association, we believe in democracy and the rule of law that is its foundation. Various courts throughout the United States considered dozens of lawsuits regarding claims of impropriety related to the Nov. 3, 2020, election. The courts confirmed that the 2020 election was properly and fairly conducted with accurate and certified results.
We have seen both the fragile, yet resilient, nature of our democracy through events of the past two weeks. On Jan. 6, rioters disregarded the rule of law. Their actions were not protected under our Constitution. Rather, they were violent and inconsistent with the peaceful transfer of power. We condemn in the strongest possible terms the violent attack on America’s Capitol and Constitution on Jan. 6.
Yet we are hopeful on this day. We applaud Congress for completing its Constitutional duties in the face of this unprecedented domestic attack. And today, we have witnessed the resilience of our democracy with the peaceful transition of power through the inauguration of President Biden and Vice President Harris.
As lawyers, we have a special relationship to the rule of law, and a special responsibility to persuade our fellow citizens of its importance and to continue fighting to ensure that the rule of law will not only survive, but that it will also prevail. The Allen County Bar Association is committed to defending and upholding the rule of law, knowing that true democracy cannot exist in its absence.
