The unemployment rate fell by 0.2 percentage point to 3.5% in September, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Oct. 4. The unemployment rate is at its lowest rate in nearly 50 years when it was 3.5% also in December 1969.

Over the month, the number of unemployed persons decreased by 275,000 to 5.8 million.

Employment in health care and in professional and business services continued upward last month.
