A worker died after becoming trapped in a collapse trench March 17, according to the Fort Wayne Fire Department.

Firefighters responded at 1:52 p.m. to a report of a collapsed trench with one worker trapped. Units arrived on Franklin Avenue at Huffman Street to find one worker buried, according to a fire department news release.

Firefighters worked with city of Fort Wayne sewer workers and vacuum trucks to remove dirt and gravel from the trench. Once the worker was reached, no vital signs could be found.

Firefighters were assisted by the Fort Wayne Police Department and the city's water and sewer departments.

The Allen County Coroner's Office identified the victim as Michael Ramos, 50, of Fort Wayne. The cause of death is asphyxia due to chest compression and the manner of death is accident.

This incident is also being investigated by the Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
