When life handed Jaidyn Foust lemons, she decided to make hot cocoa bombs.

As a chocophile, I couldn’t applaud her more.

Foust, 23, lost her sales job earlier this COVID-19 disaster year, so she flipped careers and became a licensed insurance agent.

“I discovered my real passion was creating my own products,” she said.

That led to her giving up the insurance job and focusing full time on her Madison Ave. Chocolates. The Madison comes from her middle name while using Avenue adds a bit of sophistication, she said.

Using skills she learned from her aunt, her side hobby and now full-time small business allows her to use her creativity, she said.

“That’s where chocolate can get creative ... You can get whatever you want out of it,” she said.

She’s sold her bombs at farmers markets and in front of family friend Krysta Young’s Sassie Cakes, 1014 Broadway, Fort Wayne. The latter arrangement allows Young’s customers to get chocolate items while Foust can let her friends eat cake, as you will.

She started out making truffles, and makes a variety of chocolate items, but the cocoa bomb craze has taken off and she’s noticed finding molds in stock online can be hard.

She prefers to get her chocolate at Country Kitchen Sweetart, 4621 Speedway Drive, Fort Wayne. There, she said, she can find a variety of chocolate from beginners chocolate to more-expensive higher-quality product that can melt to the touch sometimes.

Most people don’t know how difficult working with quality chocolate can be, she said. For the untrained, hot cocoa bombs involves melting high-quality chocolate, painting it into a sphere-shaped mold or pouring it in and removing the excess, setting the chocolate, filling the cavities with hot cocoa mix, marshmallows and your other favorite treats and sealing two spheres together with chocolate. Place the bomb in a steaming hot cup of milk or your favorite hot beverage and watch them melt to let the inside ingredients out to mix in the drink.

Foust makes milk, dark and white chocolate bombs for $5 each and adds crushed peppermint candy on the inside as well as for a coating for $1 more.

She describes her favorite, the mint dark chocolate hot cocoa bomb, as tasting like a brownie. Yum!

Some people starting out don’t put any ingredients in one of the sphere halves, but that makes for a weaker taste, Foust said. She said she likes to “pack” hers with hot cocoa and marshmallows.

“It’s trickier than people think,” she said of making them.

A friend of mine, who’s a great home baker, tried making them and reported getting 3 or 4 “good ones” out of 10 because the chocolate wasn’t thick enough and the bombs cracked while coming out of the molds.

I think I will safely leave this bomb-making to the professionals.
