In nominating Renee Schiebel as a Health Care Hero, Lauren Caggiano, development coordinator at Community Action of Northeast Indiana, called Schiebel “a gift” to CANI Head Start.

CANI Head Start is a free, comprehensive development program that addresses educational, health, nutritional and social-service needs of low-income preschool children and their families in Allen, Noble and Whitley counties. Schiebel has worked in her position as Head Start health coordinator for six years.

“As an integral part of the CANI Head Start program she has brought professionalism to our program, coming from a hospital setting,” Caggiano wrote. “Her affiliation with Parkview has resulted in many connections and resources CANI Head Start might otherwise struggle to establish. On a daily basis, Renee works to ensure all health and developmental needs are met.” One of Schiebel’s duties is to work with Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, Ivy Tech Community College Northeast and the University of Saint Francis to recruit nursing interns to assist in the CANI program. Schiebel also works with local dental clinics to provide screenings and services for the children and families in the program.

She follows up on the children’s immunization records so they are ready for kindergarten, and brings in speakers to educate parents on a variety of topics. She also has brought Lions Clubs to the sites to perform vision screenings on the children

On a daily basis, Renee works to ensure all health and developmental needs are met.”

One of Schiebel’s duties is to work with Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, Ivy Tech Community College Northeast and the University of Saint Francis to recruit nursing interns to assist in the CANI program. Schiebel also works with local dental clinics to provide screenings and services for the children and families in the program.

She follows up on the children’s immunization records so they are ready for kindergarten, and brings in speakers to educate parents on a variety of topics. She also has brought Lions Clubs to the sites to perform vision screenings on the children and has organized bike-safety programs.

“All these resources benefit the children, staff and families and are key to CANI Head Start’s comprehensive nature,” Caggiano added.

Other positives that moved Caggiano to nominate Schiebel for the award are her positive attitude toward her work, “a smile for everyone” and her willingness to go “above and beyond her job,” Caggiano wrote.

“Renee always looks on the bright side and has a smile for everyone. She is quick to follow up and keep her supervisors informed. She has been known to drop everything to help someone in need — one time she went out of her way to make a home visit to assist a family who did not have transportation. And when working with parents, she is informative yet polite. Her gentle nature puts parents and children at ease … Such a caring and outstanding nurse deserves to be recognized,” Caggiano wrote.

“While some nurses merely go through the motions, Renee truly cares. She has made a difference in many children’s lives.”

Schiebel has many facets to her job, but one that she truly enjoys is being able to show nursing students different perspectives of nursing, including a holistic approach to a family working through emotional, physiological and even spiritual issues, she said.

“It’s a different side of nursing that I enjoy showing them, that’s outside the regular hospital setting,” she said.

“With the vision screenings, actually it was the Lions Club that came to us, and I was thrilled because they’re on a mission with Riley (Children’s Hospital) and their target age is preschool. They do advanced screening to identify about six serious eye diseases that otherwise might not be identified until they were age 7 or later, and could be permanent without early treatment.”

As an employee of Parkview Health, Schiebel said she feels fortunate that the partnership between the hospital and CANI allows her to be placed in the community program.

“I’m just very honored to get an award for something I love to do,” Schiebel said. “It’s been my very favorite job, of all I’ve ever had.”
