New students attending Grace College in Winona Lake next year will have the option of earning their bachelor's degrees in three years through an accelerated program announced Tuesday.

The accelerated program will begin in the fall of 2011 and will apply to all of the college's more than 50 major areas of study, the college said Tuesday in a statement. In addition to more quickly earning a bachelor's degree, students can obtain a master's degree in four years through the program.

Under the program, semesters will be split into two eight-week sessions, with students taking two or three courses per session. To obtain a bachelor's degree in three years, students also will take two online classes each summer.

Students who opt for the accelerated program also will be required to participate in 12 credit hours of hands-on learning experiences like internships, study-abroad opportunities, collaborative research projects and student teaching.

In the statement, Grace College said the program benefits students by not only reducing their overall college costs — by as much as an estimated 50 percent — it also allows them to enter the work force earlier.

“We have listened to people’s concerns about (the cost of) higher education and we are answering them,” Grace President Ronald Manahan said in the statement. “This is radical for us. There is risk, but the risk is far greater if we do not do (this).”
